How to Write a Funny Dedication for a Gift Book
When you order a Lovabook, you get to include a personal dedication. This is your chance to add a message that makes the gift even more special. But how do you write one that's actually funny?
1. Start With an Inside Joke
The best dedications reference something only you two understand. "For the person who still can't parallel park after 15 years" hits different than "To my best friend."
2. Mix Humor With Heart
The perfect formula: one funny line + one sincere line. For example: "You're the only person who laughs at my jokes. Thanks for having low standards. I love you."
3. Keep It Short
A dedication should be 2-4 sentences max. The book itself is the gift — the dedication is the cherry on top, not the whole sundae.
4. Use Their Nickname
If they have a nickname that makes them cringe (or laugh), the dedication page is the perfect place to use it.
5. Reference the Book
Play off the fact that they're the star of the book: "You always said you deserved your own book. Be careful what you wish for."
Example Dedications
- "To Jake — the only person who can burn water and still call himself a chef. This book is as ridiculous as you are. Love you."
- "For Sarah — because you've been telling this story wrong for years. Here's the real version."
- "To Dad — your dad jokes inspired this entire book. We're so sorry. Happy Father's Day."
- "For my best friend — I hope this book captures at least 10% of how weird you actually are."
